Reluctantly we left the lake and headed through coal country and ended up free camping at the show grounds in Collinsville, a very old coal mining town in the coal rich Bowen basin. with a strong union history. Coal was first mined in 1922. The town has a strong union history and has suffered several mining disasters underground resulting in lost lives. Unfortunately the town is in decline and I counted 90 houses for sale, that's a lot in a town with a population of 2 000.
We drove through some lovely country side, through the Clarke Ranges and over the Bowen River. Didn't stop to look at the river though as its infested with crocodiles!!!
Another big thing…the mango at Bowen. This area is a huge vegetable growing region.
Then it was on the coast and past so much sugarcane.
Finally we arrived at Airlie Beach and some tropical looking scenery.
