A Trip Back In Time

We headed south via Kambalda to Norseman. The countryside is beautiful: grey saltbush and mounds of olive green bushes, low multi-trunked eucalyptus trees, taller salmon gums with their cloud shaped foliage at the top, the red soil and rolling hills. Every so often some smarty had festooned a tree so there was one covered in white hard hats, another with ??kettles ( I think!) and the odd soft toy. So there was a blue monkey, a few rabbits and even a Santa up the trees on the side of the road.

Kambalda is still happening although most of the mines Greg worked in have now closed. The shopping centre that was so new ( it had a fantastic furniture shop and people would come from Kalgoorlie to buy things) and modern looks almost empty. We drove up Red Hill lookout and did the walk.

It looks over Lake Lefroy, a stunning salt lake that actually had some water in it as well.  Beautiful colours. Tried to remember the way to our old home ( where the three boys spent their very early years) and eventually found it. It was a great home and there were lots of families around at that time with young children. It still looks like someone loves it so that was good.

Stopped at Widgiemooltha and drove past the old pub which is a ruin now. Turning off the highway with a big yellow truck thundering up behind us involved a bit if two-way action. The truckie very kindly offered to back off so we could slow down and turn off. We surprised him by turning right to old Widgie not the new roadhouse.  Greg got out to take a photo of the old pub which is now surrounded by a "car yard " of  abandoned vehicles. Next minute some mean looking dogs of unknown parentage bounded up but they were wagging their tails...luckily!
